North Woods furniture was designed “in process” by carefully observing how children moved and worked while sitting in actual lessons in Waldorf classrooms. The design process took two years during which we made incremental refinements through actual classroom “activity trials”.

The furniture was designed by a master woodworker working together with a trained physiotherapist. The furniture was designed to achieve optimum postural benefits and beauty, while providing durability, and ease of repair and maintainence.

We manufacture four sizes of compatibly matched chairs and desks for classrooms from grade one to high school, as well as kindergarten chairs and tables. We also make library tables and teachers’ desks.

Our furniture is made in Canada using select and better quality eastern hardwoods. Our desks have hard maple tops and white ash frames with Baltic birch shelving. Our chairs have white ash frames with seats and backs made to our specifications using 100% solid veneer maple bent plywood.

The production is done with computer numeric controlled precision for the best possible fit and accuracy, and then assembled and finished by hand. Frames and shelves are fiinished with non-toxic water based varnish. Desk tops are finished with natural non-toxic oils for ease of care and long term wearbility.

Our furniture is shipped “knock down” to minimize shipping costs. Assembly is simple and requires only basic tools.
